  Winter 2016 Ju-Jitsu News

Christmas is almost here!!

Welcome to the Winter/Christmas edition of the news letter. We would like to say a big welcome to all our new starters and wish them a long and successful ju-jitsu journey.

Ju-Jitsu Christmas!

Why not buy something special for your loved ones this year and get them an Otley Ju-jitsu Hoodie, T-shirt, Beanie or Bobble hat, plus much more if you take advantage of half marked price stock (selected items only).

Kid-jitsu!

We are happy to announce that we are re-instating the Kid-jitsu class which will be held every Monday @ 4.30pm. After a brief fall in numbers we now have enough to warrant a class in its own right again.

We take children from as young as three and a half so long as they are toilet trained.

Christmas Break!

Christmas is the only time that the centre closes so the last training day is Thursday 22 December and we re-open Tuesday the 3 January.
Santa will be making an appearance during the week so don’t miss out on the fun and games.

Grading Dates!

As from January 2017 all gradings will now take place on SATURDAY afternoon at 12pm. The grading dates for next year are as follows:

Juniors:
28 January
25 February
25 March
29 April
27 May
24 June
29 July
26 August
30 September
28 October
25 November

Seniors :
28 January
25 March
27 May
29 July
26 August
28 October

As you can see there are many more dates to choose from so nobody should have to wait too long in between gradings.

Happy Christamas!!

May we take this opportunity to wish all our students, parents/ guardians a massive Happy Christmas and a good New Year from all at Otley Ju-jitsu club.
And once again thank you for your continued support because without you we would not be here
Autumn 2016 Ju-Jitsu News

Brrr…winter is coming!

Welcome to the autumn edition of the news letter. We would like to say a big welcome to all our new starters and wish them a long and successful ju-jitsu journey.
Summer is just about over and so is the holiday season. We hope you all have had some great holidays and are now ready to get stuck back into training and kick start the autumn months with a renewed energy to get that body moving. Don’t forget to let your friends know about us and get them to come along with you.

Kid-jitsu!

Unfortunately due to lack of numbers we have decided to incorporate the kid-jitsu class in with the Junior 1 class and as such the starting age will now be 4 years plus. If your child already comes to the kid-jitsu class they will be starting at 5.30 till 6.30 until further notice. Sorry for any convenience.
Christmas Holidays!
I know it’s early but here are the dates for the Christmas closure. Last training day is Thursday 22 December and we re-open Tuesday the 3 January. Santa will be making an appearance during the week so don’t miss out on the fun and games.

Holiday time!

Mike and I are taking flight to Cuba on Friday the 9 September for a short break. All classes will be running as normal. Sensei’s David, Gary and Carl will be running the show while we are away so please come to class as normal to show them your support.
New signs!
As you may have noticed on your entry in to the centre we have nice new signage. This will hopefully help allay any fears or speculation as to whether are thinking moving on; we are not going anywhere in the foreseeable future.

Easter 2016 Ju-jitsu news

Happy Easter!!

Hello everybody thought we would just get a few words in before we break for Easter. Firstly, we would like to remind you of when we will be closed over Easter which will be Saturday 26 March. We hope you all have a nice break and not too many Easter eggs.

Otley Business Awards

A big thank you to all those who nominated us for the Otley Business Awards. We have in fact been nominated for a “Good Service Award” which is brilliant. We will be attending the presentation ceremony in March with our fingers crossed; it would mean a lot to us if we were successful plus giving us valuable exposure.

New Beginnings!

We are starting some new classes this year to provide more choices for the people of Otley to be part of our special little community here at Otley Health and Martial Arts.

Firstly we are branching out into the fitness industry with our very own weight loss and exercise programme. This will be a twelve week programme helping to motivate and support those that want to lose some weight but struggle when going alone.

The Jujit-fitprogramme will be delivered in two parts; theory and practical. Theory will cover exercise and food related discussions with weigh-ins and measurement elements, and the practical will be an in-situ exercise session to help speed up weight loss. The best of both worlds brought together for convenience.

Jujit-fit is a unique blend of ju-jitsu drills and aerobic exercises, not about learning ju-jitsu, so for something different, fun and challenging come give it a go. Classes will run on Thursdays @11am commencing 3 March, however we are running some tester classes from now until then at a reduced rate of £5 per session, normally £7.50, so get ahead of the rest and start early.

Also new is our Ladies only Ju-jitsu class starting in March. Sometimes walking in to a male dominated “arena” can be a bit daunting so the ladies group will have less testosterone and more technique. We are having a free taster and sign up day on Tuesday the 15 March @ 11.30am, so put it in your diary.

One for the home educated amongst us is a class dedicated the children being taught at home. Starting after Easter is a class for any children who would like to learn Ju-jitsu from a home education background. Ages from 6 to 11 years.

This class will be held on Mondays at 1pm - 2pm, term time only. For more information you can speak to Clare or Sam Robinson

Christmas 2015 Ju-jitsu news

Happy Christmas!!

Hello everybody thought we would just get a few words in before we break for Christmas. Firstly, we would like to say a big thank you to all our students and their families for all your continued support over the years and we hope you will continue to stay with us for some time to come.

Stocking fillers!

If you are looking for something a little different to give the young ones this Christmas then why not purchase some club clothing. We’ve got T-shirts, Hoodies, Bags, Hats and more.Word to the wise; please give at least 2-3 weeks’ notice for embroidered garments as this is the turn round fromour embroiderer. Polite Note: ALL embroidered garments have to be paid for in advance. Please ask for more details.

Also on the Christmas front: our last class of the year will be on Wednesday the 23 December and we will re-open on Monday the 4th January.

Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday of this week will be games and fun nights so your child can come in fancy dress if they wish, and who knows they might even get an early Christmas pressie.

The future is bright!

We have some interesting things happening in the New Year. One amongst many is the Goal & Achievements Scheme. We have set this up to encourage the younger members of the club to become the best they can be in their Ju-Jitsu training.

Having goals is a fantastic way to help manage training time and develop a mature attitude to learning/training. More about this when the booklets come back from the printers.

Also we are introducing a Ju-Jitsu Student Report; similar to a school report but we will be providing specific details of your child’s Ju-Jitsu progress and development.

New Pricing Structure

As most of you will have seen already we have provided details of the new prices which will come into affect from the 1 January 2016. If you pay by Standing Order please make your amendments before December is out. Thank you.

Please Note: For clarification, all our training fees are worked out on duration of 12 x 4 week month’s (not 5 weeks like most months consist of). This is then broken down into 12 easy payments spread over the year.

In this price we have already calculated for the few closures we have over the year which are all the Monday Bank Holidays, Otley Cycle Race, Easter Saturday and a longer break at Christmas,

So if your child’s training day is a Monday or a Saturday, these closures do not affect the overall price you pay. However missed lessons can be made up as long as they are within the same months’ time span.

If parents would prefer to just pay for lessons that your child attends then you would be advised to change to our Pay As You Go (PAYG) method. We cannot offer further reduced rates if you choose to pay Monthly in Advance or by Standing Order.

I.E: If your chosen payment methods are to Pay in Advance/S.O and you have planned to go on holiday for two weeks during that month then your options are to revert to PAYG for that month or your child can make up lessons on your return.

Exceptions can be made given extenuating circumstances such prolonged illness/injury.

Club Closures for 2016

Scheduled club closures for next year will be all Monday Bank Holidays, Otley Cycle Race, Easter Saturday & Christmas (subject to change).

We would like to say a big well done to all the children who graded on Sunday the 27th September. Everybody brought their fighting spirit and went away with good marks and a new belt. A special well done to Carl Laurenson who graded for brown but was rewarded with Shodan Ho Black Belt for putting on a good performance.   For full details and photos of the gradings please go to our website www.otleyhealthandmartialarts.co.uk

August/ September 2015 Ju-jitsu news

Hello again peeps!

What an exciting and busy couple of months we have had and there’s still more excitement to come as we celebrate summer with our annual Kenshinkan Barbeque. Tickets are on sale now from reception for a nominal fee of £2.50 which gets you a free soft drink and a burger or hotdog. You can buy extra food and drink on the day if required.

Robinsons Building Surveyors have kindly donated a barrel of beer and all proceeds made from enjoying its contents will be divided between The Dogs Trust and the NSPCC charities. The price for a pint will be a minimal of £1 but we ask that you give generously for two great charities.

There will also be a bouncy castle for the kids and outdoor games such as swing ball, space hopper races, football and much more. We would like as many games as possible so if anybody is willing to bring some outdoor games along for the day it would be much appreciated.

So what else has been happening...

Kenshinkan Interclub Competition2015

What a brilliant day we had on Sunday 12th July. A big thank you to all those who turned up to take part, and to those that came to help and to show their support for the club. We welcomed competitors from as far afield as Middlesbrough and locally from Harrogate, Leeds and of course Otley.

If you didn't take part this year maybe you will give it a try next time. It’s just a bit of fun, especially for the kids, maybe a bit more serious for the adults but not too much. For the results and photos of the event go to our revamped webpage www.otleyhealthandmartialarts.co.uk

“It won’t happen to me!”

I am happy to report that the "It won't happen to me” ladies self defence workshop which took place here at the Centre on Sunday 28th June was a resounding success. Looking to the future there will be other similar workshops being offered including ones which will cover defences against weapons. If you are interested in attending a workshop then please get in touch with us and we will add you to our waiting list.

I have been upgrading our website and am in the process of creating student profile pages for adults and children. If you/your child are a brown belt and above and would like to feature on the page then please write a short paragraph about who you are and why you started ju-jitsu and why you like training at Kenshinkan Martial Arts.

If you’re unsure what to write then just check out those that are already on the website to get an idea. You might already be on there so go have a look at yourself! Any suggestions as to what else might be appropriate on the website then please let us know. To save paper all newsletters are posted on the website so if you would prefer not to have a paper copy you can get all the news online.

New attendance booklet!

Can we please urge you to keep these booklets safe and bring them when you make a payment to help keep all records straight because mistakes are difficult to rectify after the event.

Contact Information

Please make sure we have your up to date contact details. We would not like to be in a position where we are unable to contact you in case of an emergency.

The next junior grading will be Sunday the 26 July. Please make sure you receive a grading letter if your child is grading. Licence books and grading fee need to be handed in as soon as possible please; white belts will not have a licence book yet. The next Bank Holiday closure will be Monday the 31 August. We will be open as normal during the long summer holidays so don’t get bored, keep the kids/yourself training.

May/June 2015 Ju-jitsu news

Hello again!

I know this newsletter is pretty soon after the last one but we have more news to tell ..
The times they are a changing!(There’s a song there somewhere...) Hopefully all parents and members will have had the opportunity to fill in the short questionnaire “Opinions Please” which has been in reception for the last month or so.

The main reason for prompting the change was to make ALL classes available to ALL our members. By making the class times earlier it means the younger members can enjoy more flexibility in their class choices. The results have been unanimous in favour of the change so as from the 1st June the new times will come into effect.

To clarify this means the first class will start at 5:30pm (not 6pm), the second class will start at 6:30pm (not 7pm) and the adult’s class will start at 7:30pm (not 8pm). Just bring your child to their normal class slot. If you are unsure what this change means to you please speak to Clare or Mike.

Updated website! The Otley Heath and Martial Arts website has had a makeover. Please give it a look. We have introduced a blog page so if you have something nice to say about us please leave your feedback so others get to know what a brilliant service we provide. More changes to the website are imminent so keep checking in to otleyhealthandmartialarts.co.uk

Monthly Offers! To entice new members to the club we will be running monthly offers so if you know someone who wants to give Ju-jitsu a try tell them about our great offers. May's offer is “Bring friend and you both train for half price!!” Check the notice board outside or ask Clare or Mike for more details.

New attendance booklet! In the very near future we will be handing out attendance booklets for those members who pay weekly or monthly by cash. This will help ensure that all cash paid has been recorded for the benefit of both parties involved keeping everybody’s records straight. This booklet will need to be presented at the desk when making any payment so please keep it safe.

Dates for your diary! The next junior grading will be Sunday the 24th May The next Bank Holiday closure will be Monday the 25th May. Events in Otley that unfortunately interrupt Ju-Jitsu classes are thankfully not common but one such event is the Otley Cycle Race. The closure of the roads in and out of the town affect accessibility to our centre which means we will be closed on Wednesday the 1st July. Apologies for any inconvenience.

We can confirm that the interclub competition will take place at the centre on Sunday the 12th July. A full rules list is on the notice board for your perusal. We will be having a kids “King of the mat (KotM)” contest for the younger ones with (loosely) proposed age groups of 3 – 5 years, 6 – 8 years and 9-11years.

For the adults there will be kickboxing, semi contact MMA and grappling; for the juniors there will be throwing and hold down bouts, grappling and kickboxing. If you think you or your child would like to test their powers get involved, it’s safe, fair and great fun. Entrance forms will be available shortly.

Jan/Feb 2015 Ju-jitsu news

We would like to welcome Rachel Whelan to our centre who provides a range of beauty treatments to suit any occasion be it a pamper day

Now on Facebook! Being dragged kicking and screaming into the 21 century; Otley Health and Martial Arts Centre is finally on facebook! I would like to invite all of you to join us on facebook where we are posting exciting news items, offers, and important announcements for you all to read, including some inspirational posts from the instructors and staff here to keep you motivated.

MMA Circuits. Early morning MMA Circuit Training Sessions continue at full momentum! Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings see students and members groaning in exhaustion after the intense and rewarding workout sessions.
With new equipment and training techniques becoming available on a weekly basis, we would again like to invite as many people as possible to attend the sessions. If we gather enough support we may run other Circuit Training Sessions through-out the week.

At £2.50 per session (£5.00 for non-club members), our MMA Circuit Training Sessions are far greater value for money than a local gym and far, far more rewarding and friendly! Join a group that will encourage you to reach highly standards of work-out and beast you through the early morning aches to a truly good work-out! (And enjoy one of the very cheaply priced RecoverEx drinks afters to getting set up for an awesome day!

Child Safety and You. In response to recent and extremely distressing events in the news, we have begun to make in-class announcements to our younger students regarding the importance of safety and security. Our students are being instructed that, unless previously told to by their parents, children must never follow an adult or get into their car even if they know the adult.

To help further ensure the safety of our younger students, we respectfully ask that all parents remain on the premises of the Otley Health and Martial Arts Centre until classes start and that children should not be allowed to travel to or leave the centre on their own. Just because your child might know the way here does not mean they will know how to cope with an emergency situation, should one arise.

It is also extremely important that parents always keep their emergency contact phone switched on during lesson times in case of the unlikely event of an incident that requires we contact you.
The Otley health and Martial Arts Centre has a very long and happy history of child safety and security and we appreciate your help in keeping our Centre as safe as it can be.

New Pilates. Make sure to check out our new clubs recently opening in our centre! Pilates with Jan Bryce is on Mondays, Wednesdays
